Auricular Prosthesis/Prosthetic Ear

Traumatic loss of the ear and unsatisfactory surgical reconstruction are often followed by the implant-retained auricular prosthesis as the definitive treatment. The final restoration completes the individual's quest for symmetry, anonymity and a sense of serenity that comes with having a stable and normal-looking ear.

Customizing the prosthesis to meet and match an individual's style can be achieved.

Naturalism is accomplished by selective surface treatment: leaving sheen on select cartilaginous areas and a matte finish on adjacent helix and lobe to simulate tissue much softer perhaps covered with fine vellus hair.

The slip-on type prosthesis offers an adhesive-free and surgery-free auricular (ear) prosthesis solution gently fitting over and around the affected (microtic) ear:

Many children born with microtia, anotia, Goldenhar Syndrome or hemifacial microsomia are candidates for prosthetic ear restoration. Medical Art Prosthetics often receives referrals from highly specialized ear reconstructive surgeons who sometimes cannot be encouraging about the long-term outcome of ears created from rib cartilage or preformed polyethylene scaffolds implanted under the skin. In some cases parents do not want their child to undergo any surgery - not for reconstruction and not for implants to attach prosthetics to. We understand the desire to preserve the natural vestigal tissue and make every effort to devise comfortable slip-over type ears that provide elegant restorations to help people through periods when they wish to keep all options open.

Non-surgical repair of microtia: We respect each individual's desire to keep their own tissue intact, and we often work over and around the tissue to bring about perfectly acceptable non-surgical ear prosthesis results. Placement of titanium osseointegrated implants into the skull to retain the prosthesis almost always requires total ablation of natural ear tissue. Some retrospective studies in the medical literature based on patient questionnaires and interviews support this treatment selection as offering the greatest long-term patient satisfaction. As an independent facial anaplastology center we are proficient in all methods and respect each individual's choice of treatment options.

All implant retention systems are available including the bar-clip attachment of ear prostheses. Many factors are important; from bone and soft tissue quality to lifestyle to individual personality, and we are privileged to team with surgical and prosthodontic specialists- and you- to package a prosthetic restoration that is uniquely suited to you.

Symmetry: We use digital scanning and milling machines in our facility to obtain a very accurate mirror image of the involved anatomy whenever it enhances our process and your final result. This kind of 3D imaging and rapid-prototyping technology is constantly improving, and it will continue to be an important tool in our delivery of comprehensive prosthetic care.
